Home

Day off. We set sail to Northampton today for an appointment, dollar store, groceries, hardware store, and a drink with a friend. I insisted on going to 3 grocery stores, and after the first one unexpectedly surpassed our weekly food budget, I proceeded to spend even more at the other two stores to see if this food could last us 3 weeks. Things to avoid noted: bulk olive oil at the co-op costs 12$ and bulk chai tea costs 9$. Kenzie and I bet on our groceries lasting 3 weeks. Another reason to cozy up in our Hancock apartment. The drive to Northampton felt long. It felt wrong to be driving, well, at all, really since we have barely driven in the past week. I prefer our snow shoes or skis. We have not dared to bike yet. Our driveway remains a sheet of ice, which you should make sure to shimmy your boots across so that you don't plummet backwards. Northampton did not feel like memories and friends and a place I was glad to return to. It did not feel like home. And that, I guess, is reassuring. Tonight, I'm glad to be home. I'm glad to be somewhere where all my things have their place, hanging mug, double blanket, spice rack. More than that, I'm glad to be home with a person that I love and a place with a pond and goats and mountains and less than 1,000 people. This, I think, feels like home.
